Oregon State University
Horn Studio

Typical OSU Horn Students are:

  • Music minors or non-majors who wish to continue developing their skills while pursuing a degree outside of the music school. Current OSU Horn students major in diverse degree programs including Engineering, Computer Science, Forestry, English and Biology.
  • Music education majors with ambitions to play at a semi-professional or advanced amateur level.
  • Music performance majors who wish to refine their skills and learn standard repertoire before transferring to a high-level conservatory or applying to a graduate program.
  • Dual degree candidates who want to explore the option of  a musical career while pursuing a non-music degree.

Lesson plans are designed to meet the goals of each individual student. During a 10 week quarter, students typically focus on a solo work to be performed with pianist at the final exam/jury. Additionally, students work on etudes, orchestral excerpts and technical exercises.

Skills emphasized in lessons include:
  • Learning how to make the most out of limited practice time
  • Developing a daily warm up that solidifies technique and promotes consistency.
  • Playing efficiently with increased endurance, flexibility  and ease through out all registers
  • Developing a versatile sound and approach to articulation
  • Musical interpretation and phrasing
  • Improving intonation and sight-reading skills through duets with instructor

In addition to personalized instruction aligned to the long term goals of each individual student, our studio features a horn ensemble program that performs quartets, large ensemble pieces and orchestral repertoire. Participants include current OSU students, recent alumni, amateur and semi-professional players from the Central Oregon community.

Additionally, the OSU Music Department features an orchestral program (recent programs include Strauss Alpine Symphony, Mahler Symphony No. 10 and Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 and 8) and an award winning band/wind ensemble program.

If you are interested in applying to Oregon State, I am happy to meet for a free virtual or in-person consultation to answer questions and demonstrate my approach to teaching the horn.
